Detour Vol. 1 Illustration
Detour Issue #1 published January 2026
I was asked by my friend Dylan to contribute an illustration for the zine attached to a new screening series he, along with some other friends in the PDX film scene, are starting called Detour, which combines film theory readings with a related screening. The inaugural screening was Terence Davies’s The Long Day Closes. I had actually not seen the film before the screening, and so in studying some clips and stills I really gravitated towards the textures and tactility that Davies picks up in his evocative, tone-poem recollection of 1950s childhood. This illustration captures a curtain that the protagonist is frequently shot in front of or behind, the thin veil that keeps him separated from the outside world and from his internal family world, depending on what side he places himself on.
